OKYEMAN UNION OF GREATER WASHINGTON AREA, INC. (Okyeman Union) is an IRS determined 501(C)3 non-profit organization formed to bring together in particular all Akyems and in general other ethnicities resident in the greater Washington area for the good of their people. The Okyeman Union was founded to unite all Akyems and others interested in the Akan culture, customs, traditions and norms in the Washington Metropolitan Area for the social, cultural and economic development of the Akyem people and the community. The Okyeman Union recognizes the fact that all the Akyem groups from Ghana namely, Abuakwa, Kotoku and Bosome share certain common historical, social, cultural and religious affinity which need to be cherished wherever we live as Akyem people. The unity of the Akyems in the Washington Metropolitan Area which is manifested in the coming together of the three groups of the Okyeman Kingdom is an envy of the other ethnic groups some of which are grounded in fragmentation and disintegration. Unity is strength, progress, development and economic emancipation. “Okyeman Te Ase Ampa!!! (Okyeman Lives on in reality)”.

In addition, it is the desire of Okyeman Union to find ways of promoting Ghanaian Culture and explore ways to assist in the development of our immediate community and the United States of America in general. Okyeman Union ardently hopes that our Ghanaian social and cultural heritage will be upheld within the American multicultural ecosystem.

The Okyeman Union is committed to the preservation of our cultural heritage as Africans and do believe in the promotion and celebration of African cultural heritage within the American multicultural environment.
